Spotlight On Summer Learning:
Why Summer?
|
Research tells us that including time for active, hands-on learning during the summer is an important component of addressing Vermont’s poverty-based academic achievement gap. The link between learning loss and high school graduation rates, achievement gaps, and academic success has been well documented, and the means for combating summer learning loss are clear. During the summer months too many children, especially disadvantaged children, lose academic ground and suffer what’s known as the summer slide. Summer slide results in students falling further behind academically and widens the academic achievement gap. Summer at A.I.M. helps keep our kids on track by providing critical support to students and families while offering a safe and nurturing learning environment.
